Research indicates the primary constituents responsible for the hypoglycemic properties of Momordica are charantin, insulin-like peptide (plant (p)-insulin), cucurbutanoids, momordicin, and oleanolic acids.
P-insulin is structurally and pharmacologically similar to bovine insulin and is composed of two polypeptide chains held together by disulfide bonds.
Research using a validated animal model of diabetes has demonstrated Momordica Charantia extracts increase glucose utilization by the liver, decrease gluconeogenesis via inhibition of two key enzymes (glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase), and improve glucose oxidation through the shunt pathway by activating glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
Several animal studies using a rodent model of diabetes have examined the effect of Momordica charantia extracts on abnormal lipid parameters. Significant decreases in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol and increases in HDL cholesterol were noted in all studies.

Diet beneficial for high blood sugar and Diabetes-

  • Purslane seeds, seed of bottle ground & fenugreek, string beans, cucumber, onion, garlic, Indian gooseberry, jambul fruit, grapes, black gram.

  • White sugar, honey, cake, jelly, chocolates, fried food, cheese, Finely milled wheat flour, Junk food , sweet fruits, potato, smoking & alcohol, egg yolk, high fat meal.

Do’s and Donts

  • Eat every 2-3 hours in small quantities rather than eating 3 large meals..
